An NCR Set has a top sheet glued with “fan-apart adhesive” to a bottom sheet; it can also have one or more middle sheets. If you order 250 two part NCR sets, you will receive 500 sheets, glued together in pairs: a tops heet and a bottom sheet in each pair.
NCR, some interesting history
NCR paper was invented in 1953. Many people are aware that the letters NCR stand for No Carbon Required, but less well known is the fact that it was developed by a company called National Cash Register, also known as NCR, who made the first mechanical cash registers i.e. tills to take payment in shops.
Before NCR, carbon paper was widely used to transfer an image
Xerox started selling the first laser printers in the late 1970s and Hewlett Packard finally persuaded consumers to start buying large numbers of inkjet printers in the late 1990s, until then all office printers used impact to press ink, usually from a ribbon, onto paper. This pressure meant that by putting a sheet of “carbon paper” between two sheets of normal paper, the impact would provide a duplicate copy. The carbon paper was made from paper with loosely bound powder on the back, held in place with thin wax.
The need for NCR paper
Fiddling around with leaves of carbon paper to create duplicate copies was time consuming and messy. Carbon paper was intended for multiple use, but if part of the surface had already transferred onto a second sheet, a gap would appear in the duplicate if part of a letter fell in the same place. So, there was a need to built in the ink onto the back of a piece of paper
NCR paper, how it works
The top sheet for an NCR Set has micro-encapsulated ink (extremely tiny capsules holding ink) on the back of the paper. The Top Sheet is known CB which stands for Coated Back. To receive the duplicate image, the Bottom Sheet is coated with a clay-like substance which grips the released ink – this is known as CF, Coated Front. The two sheets are glued at the head to hold them together until they are ready for separation.
NCR Sets with more than two parts
The coatings can be applied to both sides on a sheet, so a 4 part NCR Set would have a CB top sheet, then a CFB middle sheet, another CFB middle sheet and finally a CF bottom sheet.
